open lake forecast for lake michigan
national weather service milwaukee/sullivan wi
843 am cdt sat sep 7 2024
for waters beyond five nautical miles of shore on lake michigan.
waves are provided as a range of significant wave heights, which
is the average of the highest 1/3 of the wave, along with the
average height of the highest 10% of the waves which will
occasionally be encountered.
.synopsis...
large high pressure of 30.4 inches centered just north of lake
superior early this morning is expected to sink south and spread
into the ohio river valley saturday night into sunday morning. as
this occurs, a strong pressure gradient will linger over lake
michigan between the high pressure and departing low pressure over
eastern canada and the united states. breezy northerlies around
25 knots are expected through today and should ease in strength
tonight to around 15 knots.
along with the breezy conditions, warm lake waters coupled with
the northerly fetch and cold air aloft will come together to
create a north to south oriented band of showers and a few rumbles
of thunder over the middling portions of the lake until tonight.
conditions will be favorable for waterspouts with these showers
and convective clouds.
by sunday the high pressure will flatten and spread from west to
east through the ohio river valley. winds over the lake will come
around to west southwest, and will become breezy to 20 knots as
tighter pressure gradient sets up on the northern side of the high
pressure.
