open lake forecast for lake ontario
national weather service buffalo ny
402 am edt wed sep 16 2026

for waters beyond five nautical miles of shore on lake ontario

waves are the significant wave height - the average of the highest
1/3 of the wave spectrum. occasional wave height is the average of
the highest 1/10 of the wave spectrum.

.synopsis...
a 30.4 inch area of high pressure southeast of the lake this morning
will settle off the mid-atlantic coastline this afternoon. this will
allow for a weak cold front to slide across the lake today, stalling
near the new york and pennsylvania state line tonight. a 30.2 inch
area of low pressure riding along this stalled frontal boundary will
lift this front back northward to near the lake's southern shoreline
thursday afternoon, before the 30.2 inch surface low now across
western new york thursday afternoon carries a cold front southeast
of the lake thursday night. an area of surface high pressure
averaging 30.2 inches will then build across the upper great lakes
thursday, and then to new england saturday. following the departure
of the surface high, a 29.9 inch surface low and warm front will
near the lake from the ohio valley on sunday.
