| Sturgeon Bay Airport OverviewWilderness State Park is a beautiful beach along the NE side of Lake Michigan. It has great exposure to
SW winds and swell. I live in Oregon now, but once
sailed 6 foot swell there on hot summer day in advance
of a big cold front in 30 knot winds. This was
when I lived back in that part of the world around
1978 or so. The water in the lake there is clean enough
to drink. On calm day, I have seen 30 foot visibility
in that area of Lake Michigan. Locals tell me that
the Fall is best for sailing where the water is not too
cold yet and winds are more often strong. The sort of
epic condition I experienced probably happens about 3
days per summer there. Most summer days there are
quite and stunning with natural beauty.

To the north is Waugoshance Point. While currents are
normally weak in the Great Lakes, there are oddly enough
strong currents associated with those islands. Beware
as I am personally quite aware of at least one drowning
accident there unrelated to windsurfing! I have much
less respect for river currents in The Gorge than I
do for Waugoshance Point! (C Stuebing)
