I haven't ridden the 2019 Goya quad so I can't give any board specific thoughts. In this video Francisco suggests riding it as a quad or a twin.

Is this your light wind board? If so then large twins (17 cm or 17.5) are a good choice for making the board "feel" like it releases a bit more like a single fin for getting planing (though not necessarily plane earlier because rocker influences that more far more than fins). I prefer quads for control in strong winds and twins for liveliness in light winds.

Of course the area would be nice to know.

Trace fin outline.Start at the base , in .5cm intervals draw lines across the fin edge to edge .
Measure the lengths, ie. 9 cm, 9.25 cm etc. Add all the lengths , ie 9+9.25= 18.25
Divide by 2, ie 18.25 / 2 = 9.125, this is the area on the fin in square cm.

Much easier to do that by weight if you have access to a balance.
Cut out a square from paper , say, 10 cm x 10 cm and weigh it out. That is weight of 100 sq.cm. Then, trace and cut out the fin shape out of the same paper, weigh out, do the ratio, done!
Old school curve integration at its best Smile

Thanks, guys. I'm still working on this one. I've ridden the board a few more times since I posted my query, and am getting it to point a bit better. Still, I'd like to cheat upwind a little better. It will make a large difference in my wave count, methinks.

Hey Phil. Good to hear from you. Thanks. Yes, it is my light wind board. So far though, I have used in with both a 5.0M and 5.3M. I'm trying to use less sail for control on the waves than I have using my 5.6M.

On fins I'm looking at the K4 Scorchers, Maui Ultra, or Makani Walu2 in 17cm sizes. Being how I am, of course I'd like to split the difference between a 16 and 17cm, but that would limit me to a Maui Ultra or Black Project it seems. I'm not against any of them really. I do like the idea of riding the board as a twin. Maybe all of my prior years of surfing will come in handy riding it as a twin.

The K4's are less costly to experiment, but Leo rocks are getting meaner all the time, and G10 might be a requirement. A Makani Kaku in 18cm transformed my Simmer FSW tri-fin from marginal to excellent for my style of riding. That was a bump up in size of 3cms for the rear. I also reduced the sides by about the same amount from stock. FWIW. Cheers.

I like the idea of weighing out a square and a template. Thanks, Ugly_Bird. Sounds wild, but somehow sensible. Thanks.

If rocks are a concern I'll take a K4 over G10 any day.

this thread is another big dose or reality.

in florida i can count the number of days on less than 2 hands when a full blown wave board is the right choice. and, for all the same reasons initially discussed.

to go with an oversized set of fins, or use a cross venue free ride board (aka a FSW)?????

last few wave sessions i have had a blast with the new exocet crosses and older ones prior to that. what do i get with my cross boards? upwind, early planing, great turning. what do i give up? about 5% of my abilities to round out my top turns on waves.

wake up and smell the delusions of having wave boards anywhere else other than ideal places.

Iam sure the op will absorb this.Dose of reality from the Florida epicenter. Your sailing ability seems the same.
The question is fin size, not ego size.

where do you perceive me stroking my ego? just stating the obvious, those that use wave boards in less than optimal spots get mediocre results, no matter what their skill set.
