If I reach one person that stays at home, instead of the exposing themselves or others , it’s worth it, taking the time to write this. I have been accused of hi jacking other threads, in response to Coronavirus discussion. Particular to stay at home, go out only when essential travel is dictated. Pretty simple guidelines from Governors . Stay at home.
I have been accused of antidotes ,stories .Others are posting where , what beach is open.
You didn’t start the covid 19 nor SAR virus, accounts indicate they both originated by Chinese who like to eat protected animals, Pangolins and Civet cats. I will let those who do this to suss how, it moved from bats or what to humans, nor did I start it.
My hospital visit today , I asked my dr how many confirmed cases of covid 19, are in isolation, 80, I asked how many would there be if they, or the infected ones would have followed protocol,he replied, unable to answer but dramatically less.
Vietnam US , dead, 58220, 9/11 dead 2977, Covid 19 dead, 22858, US.
NYCity dead 9385,mass graves number unknown, significant in that they exist, it’s 2020.
The protocol, social distance, stay at home, are working, no immunization exists.
The length of the shut down is unknown , guess 6 -8 more weeks. The could a, should a, would a, finger pointing about what might have been done is keeping no one from contracting the virus at this point.
The young and healthy are at little risk, they should recover but those esp elderly, with anything from diabetes to leukemia will suffer, with any underlying heath issue higher they are at higher risk.

The real deal is scarier than a story.
Post what you like, don’t post ,don’t read, don’t give a shit.
It’s America and within the boundaries, guidelines on this forum , and the Hello Kitty forum would welcome you also.
Their is a certain amount of humor , in most things, I can assure you that the covid19 test probe, inserted into both nostrils, down near your brain, is not one of them.

Doing frequent washing of my hands. Leaving mail, newspaper in the garage for at least 24 hours (not sure that helps, it doesn't hurt). Living with my wife, staying away from other people. Doing exercise classes through Zoom or other online sources.

When going out wearing a mask if other people are likely to be near. Also wearing face shield if other people are likely to be near (still 6ft away) for a longer period than just passing. If standing 6 ft away also definitely staying away from being downwind.

My wife & I usually walk outside half an hour or more each day, sometimes on park trails, often on the sidewalks in our retirement community neighborhood where it is easy to walk more than a mile without repetition.

I also do land sailing more than once a week on empty school or university parking lots.....the few I've talked to are careful to stay away. My only windsurfing this year was last week at a small lake where all of the 50-60 people I saw carefully stayed apart from me and each other. People who might have stopped to talk before are waving politiely from a distance & going on their way.

I know I'm lucky I live in a place with plenty of inside space & lots of outside open space. Before starting a walk I can look out windows & know before I leave our part of the duplex whether anyone is on the sidewalk. (The duplex doors are 25 ft apart). I can go into our attached garage & drive out without ever being near to others.

Obviously, I'm not "sheltering in place" to the extent that most others are forced to do. I'm claiming the presence of open space around me allows me to "shelter away from others" without being confined to home. (Iowa does not have a "shelter in place" government order for exactly that reason.)

Extremely realistic approach , preventative measures. My doctors are using 2 masks and a shield.
The walks I feel are beneficial, both exercise and mental refreshment.
I’m pleased to read your post, I’m wondering that Iowa has anything to do with your choice, laid back mid west attitude , vs it’s all about me me me.
Take care
Cheers

This statement applies to liberals and conservatives alike.

I don't think most Americans like being told what to do by the government.
We have plenty of reason to distrust the govmt and media. They don't have a great track record.

If the government simply said everyone stay at home, you will get to collect unemployment if you lose your job, and by the way we will increase unemployment duration and $ as needed for this crisis; Then I would take this more seriously. Once it turns into Trillions of dollars to bankers and major corporations as the first action, I call BS.

I acknowledge that this virus is worse than the common flu. And also that drastic measures needed to be taken early on because we didn't know what it really was. It might have been MUCH worse than any contagion we have encountered. Lucky it SEEMS to be turning out to be better than the initial worst case scenarios.

There is a cost that goes beyond money by having people shelter in place and lose their jobs. Mental health, poverty/hunger, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, suicide ....

I guess what i'm getting at is that this doesn't necessarily break down to selfish vs. non-selfish people. For me I'm following the rules but irritated as hell on how the whole thing is going down.

U2, I know it must suck to be in a high risk category due to your illness. Best of luck in your recovery.

although the mortality rates for the young and healthy are low (comparatively), it doesn't mean CV19 won't f you up. Some of the hospitalization rates for youngish people in CA (only data i've read.. haven't investigated further) are surprising. i.e. just because you don't die doesn't mean you can't/won't get really sick. yes the risk is lower for younger people.... you want to bet on being an outlier? i wouldn't want to be on a vent.

i have friends whose family members have died. it's not a pretty picture. acquaintances who have had it who are young and healthy describe a picture that is pretty dismal. this ain't like trying to get chicken pox when you are a kid so you can "get it out of the way."

my friend just pulled his father off of life support on Monday. even if his father had survived, his quality of life was wrecked... low blood oxygen levels had led to death in his extremities.

stay safe everybody!

Kevin,
I greatly appreciate you sharing your experience.
I don’t much care for the continued pasting of graph this graph that, estimates which include age groups, that may succumb.
Hospital, test yesterday, I spoke at length to the nurse, about the origin, the seemingly Terminator quality of this virus to adapt ,
Likelihood of a vaccine, not anytime soon. She gave me a rather graphic description of a 20 yo, healthy , who didn’t make it.Once inside it like to reside at the bottom of the lungs.
From day one, my thoughts and actions have been , follow the guidelines as set forth by the state where you live.
You can’t over precaution .
There are venues where a windsurfer would be out of harms way, getting to the water by car, is the scary part.
This is not a chicken little cartoon, it’s the real deal, many things will never go back to pre virus.
PS: I enjoy your fb , photos of the cats and more, I have a new kitten 9 weeks old, she is fearless, playing with our older cat, and jumping on dogs.
I have found she provides some emotional support, at least a distraction.
Don’t know if you read some of my other posts. I may be on a downhill slide, hoping to come to grips with a new cancer treatment, that gains me a session or two later this year. Strangely I feel at peace, I’ve had a good go, a great career, 2 great pass times, windsurfing being , words can’t say.
Thanks .

You're mixing apples and oranges. The media's track record has spots on it but is generally pretty good, despite fifty years of drum beating against it.

The federal government currently is given to saying things that are blatantly not true. It's a particular problem when dealing with a challenge that only obeys the laws of physics and biology.

In my own state (NY) we have some infighting, and a mayor who has given some bad advice, but overall is working to reduce the number of sick people.

In my own life there are four people that I know of who've been hit by covid-19. Two are now dead (1 in his eighties, he had been frail, 1 65, he had been robust and vibrant) 1 has been hospitalized twice but is now home, the last is currently sick but has been advised to ride it out at home.
