Dave, the fin won't stick passed the tail. They are certainly much more traditional.
Zero problem in chop. The stubby wasn't as friendly and had fin issues yes. _________________ *NEW* - Manu's Windsurfing Blog, The STORE! |

Did you prefer either board over the other - the 95 on the face of it is pretty big for you I would guess, but wonder if the fashion for bigger boards was borne out in your testing |

The bigger vs smaller boards dilemma depends far more on riders prefs, sailing style and objectives, and many venue and wind quality factors. There are several reasons, for example, explaining why and when I, as an individual, have deliberately swung my board choices towards larger sizes the past 2 or 3 years. Not one of those reasons involves "fashion", "trends", or "the Jones". |

Will add more comments with future testing / tuning.
Preference is subjective and depends on type of sailing.
Surf sailing, jumping / planing, etc.
If it's a bit light with mushy waves the 95 would be more productive. When blowing more established with chop or better waves 85 would be better. For the same let's say 4.7 sail. The 95 will give more pop for a given speed, avs carry more weight through a move, while the 85 feels lighter in the air. _________________ *NEW* - Manu's Windsurfing Blog, The STORE! |

I have to agree. I've taken to riding the biggest Open Ocean
I've ever seen produced (at what I figure is about 100 ltrs,
and maybe a little more). I bet I used that board like 40%
of the time last season because of gustier than usual conditions.
That board is not light! I'm guessing 20 lbs minimum
without skeg or straps. But at 8'4" it rides plenty small
and turny, planes up nearly as early as my beloved retired
RRD Freedide (which was about the same volume and about
a foot longer, but at least 4 lbs lighter).
Frankly, for junk wind, I've never had a better board.
The places I notice the weight the most, are in the air, and
walking the thing to and from the water.
At 19 or 20 lbs though Manu's Starboard (from the other thread)
is an outlier in its weight range. I'd guess it's got water in it.

p.s. I'm not much for fashion or trends either, but I've got a serious Jones
going right now. Hopefully that'll be partially reduced when I hit the slopes
at Steamboat in 2 weeks ;*)

Hey Manuel
were you able to see where that humming was coming from on the 2020 fanatic freewave ? which board volume was it or was it both boards having that sound?
Thanks |

Based on the review I'm hanging onto my 105 STB FreeWave. It's a great board for light wind wave sailing. Its definitely skatey, which probably upset some people. You can use it as a more free ride vs wave, but requires lots of fin-fiddling to stop spin out. I think fanatic should have just tuned the existing shape rather than going more traditional. I also have a Blast 115, and that works really well as a fast free-ride/fast slalom board. |
