Every 4/3 suit is designed for 48-55 degree water temps.
Looser the fit, less cold water protection....and easier in and out.
Personally, always wear correct fit and surfing wetsuits..less rubber out. Because I'm not worried about standing around on shore and wetsuit warmth.
For summer 58 degree water, I DO wear a bigger size, because warmth is not needed, and 4/3's are the same price as 3's.
3/2 durability of seams is suspect.
Warm 60 degree air and water, usually a 2mm springsuit.
5'10, 155 lbs., 70 years old. |

I use and extra lanyard around on the pullup strap since
I am not a double jointed yoga master and it doubles as
a hat keeper when it's not hurricane force winds.
Also use a velcro strap around the flap in the back so I can
pull it up the back panel to a place where I can grab it.
Most off the newer wet suits are super stretchy making it
possible to have one that is not a custom fit. |

The biggest issue is one of windchill. I have had a tough time staying warm in windy conditions without the smooth skin type suit but the knock is that they are not as durable. I was a Neilpryde person for years but I don't think they make a smooth skin suit anymore and they are really hard to find. I am wearing an Ion Strike Amp but falling apart after one season. |

Windchill is only a problem when you're on shore.
In the water, you get splashed constantly, so your wetsuit is wet.
Now, light breeze and you never fall...why are you cold?
When watching the action, put on a windbreaker. |

Every body deals with wind chill differently. A lot of people have no idea what I am talking about. If a surf type suit works for you, consider yourself lucky. They don't for me. |

When I am out, I always wear my Neil Pryde Sailing PFD for the peace of mind. The added benefits of it include blocking wind to the upper body and providing buoyancy for waterstart. But I know many considered it uncool, just like the mini-van.... |

The OP doesn't have to worry about this "windchill" issue in colder weather. Goretex suits stay as comfortable on land as they are in the water, which is saying a LOT. Still, I keep a water- and wind-proof, insulated, hooded, lower-calf-length duster handy from Sept until June. Ya never know; I feel wind-chilled even in my 5mm neoprene dry suit if standing around on shore between sessions for more than a few minutes. |

Gotta say, past 3 Oneills I had fell apart at the leg seams in 3 months. I have really skinny legs, and the suits are 2 mediums and 1 large...me 5'10" and 155 lbs. |
