how much of an effect does moving the mast foreward or backward ? is it similar to WS ? with all things staying the same on my foil rig....If i slam the mast all the way foreward ....what would i expect ? or all the way rearward ?

So far have I have not played around with this....i have been using a two bolt base...but just got a 1 bolt base.

The effect is larger and more noticeable than when windsurfing. More forward = more control, more back = easier flight. But that may somewhat depend on your gear setup and sailing style, so try it out.

You can control the elevation or descent of your board in two ways. One is shifting your weight forward or aft, the other is by tilting the rig forward or aft if sheeted in (sheeting out changes the equation).

Here is what I feel & see with moving the mast base forward or backward. Forward pushes down more on the nose so I compensated with more back foot pressure which is how I started out. Moving the base backward pushes down less on the nose so I compensated by moving the foil forward & sailing with more front foot pressure. So for me, moving the mast base forward had me controlling elevation more with the sail & moving the mast base backward had me controlling elevation more with my weight. I currently foil with my mast base 3 cm off the back & my mast located directly under my rear foot which puts it a few cm forward of the mid mark. I now tend to leave my sail stationary while I trim with my weight. When I started with my mast base forward & foil rear I was trimming with the rig while I remained stationary.

There are TWO masts as a foiler.
One holds the sail.
The other holds the foil. That one should be forgotten, as what matters is the location of the front wing, not where the foil mast is located.

For me everything gets easier with the mast base fully rear. So much that I'm looking to install a longer track.
I sail very upright on relatively narrow boards with bigger foils and small sails. Racy setups will be different.

Also the latest freeride foil boards have the track going waaaaaay back, almost to the front straps.

Its all a balancing act. Try different things until you find what works for you.
My board has a adjustable foil track. Super easy to move. The slightest adjustment makes a big difference in where I stand on the board and how much front or back pressure I need to stay level. I started out moving the foil mast a inch at a time. Than 1/2 inch. I now fly level with 50/50 foot pressure in both straps. My last board and foil did not have this option. I spent a lot of time moving the sail mast and foot straps. I never got it set just right. I think every board should have some sort of quick foil connect and an adjustable foil track. I even remember a WS board that had sliding foot straps inserts.

Front of foil mast to center of sail mast is 43". Great spot to start with SS Wizard 125. For the 84cm wing and 76cm wing you swap the fusilodge so the 84cm moves 2" forward since it has no neck on the back of the foil.

I am sure others can give input with different boards and rigs. I use Sailworks Flyers.

Check out my video going over this setup.

Mast base position affects fore-aft weight distribution over the board / foil so is very important.

If you're having trouble getting up on the foil and feel like you have to lean all your weight onto your back foot to maintain flight, move the mast base back to help shift the weight distribution aft.

If you're overpowered and struggling to keep your altitude from rising too high, move the mast base forward to help shift the weight distribution forward.
