Did anyone else have this happen to them? Yesterday (4/25) I was sailing at the Salvo Day Use Area for the afternoon and I hit fish at least six different times. The third time catapulted me and the sixth time tore the fin out of the powerbox, causing me to have to walk all the way in. I checked with some local fishermen as well as one of the shops, and was told that due to the early warming of the sound waters, schools of Drum fish are coming into the sound to spawn. Apparently, Drum fish can get pretty big. I've been sailing a long time and never, ever had this happen to me before. |

In Mandurah Bay in WA, windsurfers hit rays on a regular basis. At the best spots, the water is too shallow for the rays to escape downward. I have only had relatively mild hits, but my wife has a full-on hit hit at speed that resulted in a double-somersault catapult. Fortunately, only the harness line broke. Another windsurfer managed to buckle his board in a collision with a big ray. I guess he had his feet really wedged into the straps... |

The rays at Hatteras are very sensitive , they are abundant , never heard of anyone hitting one.
Maybe their smarter being East Coast. _________________ K4 fins

Years ago, sailing in Oyster Bay, flying fish were jumping across my longboard, and a few hit my feet, a rare occurrence. Soon after that, I was looking for the flyers, and instead there were lots of small jellies, and I took extra care to not fall in, and it was very satisfying to see I had cut a few of the jellies w/ my fin. Never hit any big fish, tho. Almost hit a big green turtle cruising fast off Aruba, once. |

We'd often hit dense rafts of scores, maybe hundreds, of big carp in NM lakes. We couldn't see them among the surface turmoil (that's a WINDY place!) until we plowed into them. No endos, but they slowed us to a crawl very quickly. We must have fileted many of them. |

Hit a sea turtle in Barbados and broke the fin tab.
Also hit brown trout in Lake Ontario, but only felt a minor slow down.
It happens more than one can imagine. |
