Just in case you already have plans for the third weekend in June, you might want to start trying to get out of them now. After nearly a nearly ten year hiatus, the 2010 Pistol River Wave Bash has been scheduled for June 17th through the 20th. Permissions and insurance are already in place. The Event Center in Gold Beach will host the launch and closing party. Big Winds, Chinook, DaKine, Maui Sails, NoLimitz, Starboard and Windsport have already expressed their stoke and willingness to help sponsor this project. Yeah, I'm impressed by all the great energy that's coming together for this already.
Samantha Bittner is the event promoter and she has a temporary web site up at http://www.wavebash.weebly.com.
Now the call is out for judges, additional sponsorship, contestants and any other support you might want to bring to this. And I'll be looking forward to seeing you there if you can make it. With respect and gratitude. Dana

The triple X contest back in 03 or so was pretty cool. The local crew, Rock regulars, and everybody else was able to sail wherever we pleased during the heats. Nobody ever got in anyones way and everyone had a good time. It wasn't super crowded, parking wasn't a problem, and there wasn't any of those annoying banners popping any ear drums in all that wind.

Yeah, I was sorry to miss that one. For sure, it's another great format for a contest and I think it would be excellent if they would bring the Triple X back too. There are still lots of great summer weekends unscheduled.

Gold Beach has always shown a lot of love for the windsurfing tourism (apart from the odd complaint by a few of the more recently transplanted windsurfers anyway) and all kinds of support can be found for events in spite of the lean times. There's even a local Mexican restaurant that offers a windsurfer's discount.

Bring it they say. As do I. With respect and gratitude. Dana

2010 Pistol River Wave Bash
The Bash is Back!
Pistol River State Park June 17th to the 20th, 2010
It really does seem like it has been a while since the last good windsurfing contest in Oregon. Where could be better than the notoriously windy and strikingly beautiful stretch of beaches at Pistol River? The timing is epic as the third week in June is a prime window to catch classic wavesailing conditions on the south coast of Oregon. The sailing season typically kicks in by early June with strong high pressures offshore. The swells of Spring are still hitting. Even the new moon tides that week are auspicious, with large swings from low to high in the afternoons. It even falls on the week before Windfest in the Gorge.
Look for the 2010 Pistol River Wave Bash to draw some of our finest windsurfing and stand up paddling talent from Maui, all up and down the west coast as well as the east coast and possibly even further. So if you have something else scheduled, you might want start trying to get out of it now. The double elimination windsurfing contest will be run during the two best days of wind and waves, and stand up paddle board contests/events will fill any no-wind days or settle for the least windy period anyway. The Gold Beach Fairgrounds will lend us all the room we could possibly need for the opening and closing ceremonies.
We hope you can come join us for what promises to be the most insane US wave sailing contest of the coming seasons.

Sam Bittner of Trade Wind Events is organizing this event. Feel welcome to contact her with your support, questions, comments or your entry. You can reach her through the event website at http://wavebash.weebly.com/

I can't find anywhere on that web site who the competition is for. Is it experts only? How will it be judged? height of jump or tricks...etc?

The windsurfing this year in Pistol River is already starting to happen. There's even a blog. As far as the judging, I have no idea nor care. Maybe its for the amount of stickers on your vehicle or for the amount of fins in your board. Its just a bash.

... the Bash is designed to be predominantly a wave contest so with the assumption there are waves, they will score most heavily. The jumps will also be scored though so you certainly might want to boost a couple of those too as long as you don't miss a set doing it. Check the registration part of the site on the navigation bar at the top for the preliminary breakdown of the divisions, (subject to change as they fill out) and there is certainly has been some call for a Grand Masters division.

With forward looking. Dana

Perhaps something like this just might win if there's no wind.
