Is this due to the G10 (laid up) being harder to repair, i.e. file out, than the K4 plastics? it just seems like the softer material would ding easier. I could be wrong. Thanks. |
K4 stiff material is as rigid as G10 but less fragile plus it's easier to sand out dings. I sail on shallow reefs and it's all I'll use there now. Trashed a few MFC RTM fins but still have my first K4 set which are the soft material. Also seen a bunch of munched G10 and carbon fins there. |

I haven't found the plastic fins easy to get a nice finish after sanding. I also find the trailing edge of the K4 Rocket especially susceptible to damage (all trailing edge damage was off the water ). For cross onshore wave sailing the K4 Rocket is a great shape.
The MFC red RTM fins are definitely more fragile than G10 |

I have 3 sets of Rockets, The tips are on the fragile side, trailing edge damage none.
I would not purchase fins based on how easily they repair, nor the finished repaired product.
I have RTMs by a couple different companies , Witchcraft and FCS, both are perfect.
Grants thoughts opinions , on rocks and K4 s over G10 , I don’t follow, unless if your going to crash into rocks( controlled flight into rocks , why do that ?) Then K4 are much cheaper to replace. I avoid the rocks to the extent possible. _________________ K4 fins

Where I sail sometimes you just can't avoid rocks, its the nature of the area. Large tide swings with reefs. I avoid the danger areas at high speed but sometimes I'll drag slightly.
Maybe I'm just not sensitive to finish quality but I don't see a huge impact from a slightly less smooth surface. The dents are much less severe in K4s compared to G10 in my experience but if course you can't fill them.
Then again at the price I'm not tempted to rebuild a K4.
I may grab a few Rockets to play with a twins and possibly a thruster in another board. The Scorchers didn't really do it for me as twins. Maybe because their base is so long I had no adjustment. When I run them in a different board as a thruster I like them forward in the box. |

Oh , ok unique location with rocks.
Dents , scrapes , abrasions on a fin will detract from its performance.
K4, before anyone but a select few In the UK had heard of them, I got a pair of US box , Stubbys , I modified the base to a probox , I used West Sysyems 105 epoxy, it has still held fine.these were fitted as rears to a Fanatic Quad I converted.
If I were to do a repair on K4s, I would use, because it’s more a paste as mixed, is really easy to do and sand, this : PETTIT EZTEX 7100, marine epoxy repair compound.
It’s a s easy as brushing your teeth.
My lake in Maine is a glacier lake, only time consistently that I hit rocks is with Formula length fins, I made my Rocket a 2+1 to avoid this . _________________ K4 fins

Theq, You may already know this, but if you go the Makani route, they won't fit in the Goya box the way they come. You'll need to mention that to Makani and they will cut them down to fit for you. I actually had to trim mine a little more from what they did with a Dremel to get them to fit.
